Happy family — health insurance protection for your loved ones

What is ACA / Marketplace health insurance?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as "Obamacare," created Health Insurance Marketplaces where individuals and families can shop for and enroll in health insurance plans. In North Carolina, the Marketplace operates through HealthCare.gov. Plans are offered by private insurance companies and are categorized by metal tier: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. All plans cover essential health benefits including doctor visits, prescriptions, maternity care, and preventive services. Learn more about ACA plans in NC →

When is ACA Open Enrollment?

The ACA Open Enrollment Period typically runs from November 1 to January 15 each year (dates may vary slightly). During this window, anyone can enroll in or change their Marketplace plan for the upcoming year. Outside of Open Enrollment, you can only enroll if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to a qualifying life event like losing employer coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new state.

Do I qualify for a premium subsidy?

You may qualify for a premium tax credit (subsidy) if your household income is between 100%–400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). For 2026, many North Carolina residents qualify — some pay as little as $0–$50/month after subsidies. Your subsidy amount depends on your income, household size, age, and location. What's the difference between Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans?

Bronze: Lowest premiums, highest out-of-pocket costs. Good if you're healthy and rarely use care. Silver: Moderate premiums and costs. If your income qualifies for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR), Silver plans offer enhanced benefits. Gold: Higher premiums, lower copays and deductibles. Good for frequent doctor visits or prescriptions. Platinum: Highest premiums, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Best for heavy healthcare users. For most North Carolinians, Silver plans with CSR offer the best value.

Can I use a licensed agent to enroll at no extra cost?

Yes! Working with a licensed insurance agent like Triangle Life and Health costs you absolutely nothing — our services are free. The insurance companies pay us a commission, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through us, directly on HealthCare.gov, or through a call center. The advantage of working with us is personalized guidance — we compare plans, check subsidy eligibility, and help you find the best fit for your doctors, medications, and budget.

What if I lost my job — can I still get health insurance?

Yes. Losing employer-sponsored health coverage is a qualifying life event that triggers a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. You can enroll in a Marketplace plan even outside of Open Enrollment. You may also be eligible for COBRA continuation coverage from your former employer, but Marketplace plans with subsidies are often significantly cheaper. Don't wait — contact us as soon as you lose coverage. Call (919) 689-6565

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Yes. Under the ACA, insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you more because of pre-existing conditions — including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, asthma, mental health conditions, or pregnancy. All ACA Marketplace plans must cover essential health benefits, and there are no lifetime or annual coverage limits.

I'm between 60 and 65 — what are my options?

If you're not yet eligible for Medicare (turning 65), your main options are: ACA Marketplace plans (with potential subsidies), employer-sponsored insurance, COBRA (if recently left a job), or short-term medical insurance for temporary gaps. Many people in this age group find that ACA plans with premium subsidies are the most affordable option. We specialize in helping people in this "coverage gap" find the right plan.
