If you've been looking into final expense insurance, chances are you've already seen Mutual of Omaha pop up. There's a reason for that — they're one of the most trusted names in the business, and their Living Promise whole life policy is one of the best final expense products on the market right now.
I've helped dozens of families get coverage through Mutual of Omaha, and I'll walk you through exactly what makes this policy worth a serious look — the plans, the costs, the fine print, and who it's best for.
Living Promise is a simplified issue whole life insurance policy designed specifically for final expenses — funeral costs, medical bills, credit card debt, or anything else you don't want your family stuck paying. It's permanent coverage, meaning it stays in force your entire life as long as you pay the premiums.
Here's what makes it stand out:
Mutual of Omaha offers two versions of Living Promise. Which one you qualify for depends on your health answers.
| Issue Ages | 45 – 85 |
| Coverage Amounts | $2,000 – $40,000 |
| Waiting Period | None — full benefit from day one |
| Tobacco Classes | Standard Tobacco / Standard Non-Tobacco |
| Riders Available | Accelerated Death Benefit (free) + Accidental Death Benefit (optional) |
This is the most popular plan and the one most people qualify for. You answer a short health questionnaire — no invasive medical tests — and if you're approved, you get 100% coverage starting on day one. No waiting period, no reduced benefits in the early years.
The Accelerated Death Benefit rider comes at no extra cost. If you're diagnosed with a terminal illness (12 months or less life expectancy) or confined to a nursing home for 90+ consecutive days, you can access your death benefit early while you're still living. That's a huge deal.
| Issue Ages | 45 – 80 |
| Coverage Amounts | $2,000 – $20,000 |
| Waiting Period | 2 years for natural causes |
| Tobacco Classes | Standard (no tobacco distinction) |
| Riders Available | None |
If you have more significant health conditions, Mutual of Omaha may offer you the Graded Benefit plan instead. There's a 2-year waiting period for natural causes of death — meaning if you pass from natural causes in the first two years, your beneficiary receives all premiums paid plus 10% (not the full face amount).
However — and this is important — accidental death is fully covered from day one, even on the graded plan.
After two years, the full benefit kicks in regardless of cause of death.
Mutual of Omaha consistently has some of the lowest premiums in the final expense market. Here are some sample monthly rates for non-tobacco applicants on the Level Benefit plan:
| Age | $10,000 | $15,000 | $25,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | ~$24/mo | ~$33/mo | ~$52/mo |
| 55 | ~$28/mo | ~$39/mo | ~$61/mo |
| 60 | ~$33/mo | ~$46/mo | ~$73/mo |
| 65 | ~$39/mo | ~$55/mo | ~$89/mo |
| 70 | ~$49/mo | ~$70/mo | ~$115/mo |
| 75 | ~$62/mo | ~$89/mo | ~$148/mo |

For the Level Benefit plan, Mutual of Omaha uses a simplified issue questionnaire — about 10 yes/no health questions plus a height/weight chart. No medical exam. No blood work. No lab visits.
They also run an MIB (Medical Information Bureau) check and a pharmaceutical database check — this is standard and just verifies the information on your application.
Common disqualifying conditions for the Level plan (these would move you to Graded):
Even if you have diabetes, heart conditions, COPD, or other chronic illnesses — you can often still qualify for the Level plan. That's one of the biggest advantages of Mutual of Omaha.
As an independent agent, I work with multiple carriers. I don't work for any one company — I work for you. So when I say Mutual of Omaha is my top recommendation for final expense coverage, it's because the numbers back it up:
Living Promise is an excellent fit if you're:
Mutual of Omaha only sells Living Promise through licensed agents — you can't buy it online or by calling the company directly. That's actually a good thing, because an independent agent like me can compare Mutual of Omaha with other carriers to make sure you're getting the best deal for your specific situation.
I'm licensed in 13 states, AHIP and FFM certified, and I've been helping families find the right coverage since 2012. There's no cost or obligation to get a quote — I'm here to help you make the right choice for your family.
