Most people know Aflac for their supplemental health insurance and that famous duck. But Aflac also offers a solid final expense whole life insurance policy that's worth considering — especially if brand recognition and simplicity are important to you.
Here's my honest review of Aflac's final expense offering, including what I like, what I don't, and who it's best for.
Aflac Final Expense Plans Overview
Aflac offers two types of final expense whole life coverage:
Level Plan (Full Coverage From Day One)
| Issue Ages | 45 – 80 |
| Coverage | $5,000 – $50,000 (ages 45–55) / down to $25,000 max (ages 76–80) |
| Death Benefit | Full benefit from day one for both accidental and natural death |
| Medical Exam | None — health questionnaire only |
| Annual Admin Fee | $48 |
| Riders | Accelerated Death Benefit, Accidental Death Benefit, Children's Term Rider |
This is Aflac's standard final expense plan. You answer health questions, and if approved, you get full coverage starting immediately. No waiting period, no reduced benefits.
Modified Plan (For Health Challenges)
| Issue Ages | 45 – 75 |
| Coverage | $2,000 – $25,000 |
| Death Benefit | Graded for natural death in first 2 years (premiums + 10%); full benefit year 3+ |
| Accidental Death | Full benefit from day one |
| Annual Admin Fee | $48 |
The Modified Plan is Aflac's option for people with more serious health conditions. Similar to other carriers' graded plans — limited payout in the first 2 years for natural causes, but accidental death pays full from day one.
What Makes Aflac Different?
The Good
- ✅ Brand trust — everyone knows Aflac. Some clients feel more comfortable with a name they recognize
- ✅ Children's Term Rider — cover kids/grandkids/great-grandkids from 30 days old to 18, convertible to whole life at ages 22–25
- ✅ Cash value — the policy builds cash value you can borrow against
- ✅ Payment flexibility — can align premiums with your Social Security deposit schedule
- ✅ No medical exam
Things to Consider
- ⚠️ $48 annual admin fee — Mutual of Omaha charges $36, Transamerica's is built into the premium
- ⚠️ Accelerated Death Benefit caps at $15,000 — Mutual of Omaha and Transamerica allow higher amounts
- ⚠️ Accidental Death Rider limited to ages 40–45 on the Level plan — much narrower than competitors
- ⚠️ Rates tend to be higher — Aflac's average cost of $74/month for $10,000 at age 60+ is above what Mutual of Omaha and Transamerica typically charge
Aflac Final Expense Pricing
According to Aflac, the average cost of a $10,000 final expense policy for people over 60 is $74/month ($888/year). That's on the higher side compared to other carriers.
For comparison:
- Mutual of Omaha: typically ~$33–39/month for $10,000 at age 60–65
- Aflac: ~$74/month for $10,000 at age 60+
That price difference adds up over time. For a $10,000 policy, you could be paying $400–500+ more per year with Aflac. This is why it's so important to compare carriers — and why working with an independent agent makes a real difference.

Who Is Aflac Final Expense Best For?
Aflac final expense may be a good fit if you:
- Strongly prefer a well-known, widely recognized brand
- Want to add children's/grandchildren's coverage on the same policy
- Value the ability to align payments with Social Security deposits
- Are between 45–80 and looking for straightforward whole life coverage
That said, I always recommend comparing Aflac with Mutual of Omaha and Transamerica before deciding — the pricing differences can be significant, and you may get better coverage and more features at a lower cost.
