7 Insurance Tips Everyone Should Know Before Choosing a Plan

Choosing the right insurance plan isn't just about finding the lowest premium — it's about making sure you're truly covered when you need it most. Whether you're shopping for Medicare, ACA marketplace coverage, or life insurance, these practical tips can save you time, money, and stress.

1. Don't Just Compare Premiums — Compare Total Costs

A plan with a low monthly premium might sound appealing, but it could come with high deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums. When comparing plans, look at the total annual cost:

  • Monthly premium × 12
  • Expected copays for doctor visits and prescriptions
  • Deductible amount
  • Out-of-pocket maximum (your worst-case scenario)

This gives you a more accurate picture of what you'll actually pay throughout the year.

2. Check That Your Doctors and Medications Are Covered

Before enrolling in any plan, verify two things:

  • Provider network: Are your current doctors, specialists, and hospitals in-network?
  • Drug formulary: Are your prescriptions covered, and at what tier?

Switching to a plan that doesn't cover your medications or requires you to find new doctors can be costly and disruptive.

3. Understand Your Enrollment Windows

Insurance has specific enrollment periods — missing them can mean going without coverage or paying penalties:

  • Medicare: Initial Enrollment Period (3 months before/after turning 65), AEP (Oct 15 – Dec 7), OEP (Jan 1 – Mar 31)
  • ACA Marketplace: Open Enrollment (Nov 1 – Jan 15), plus Special Enrollment Periods for qualifying life events
  • Life Insurance: No enrollment period — but premiums increase with age, so earlier is better

4. Review Your Coverage Every Year

Plans change annually — benefits get added or removed, premiums adjust, and provider networks shift. Even if you're happy with your current plan, take 15 minutes each fall to:

  • Review your Annual Notice of Change (Medicare) or renewal notice (ACA)
  • Compare your current plan against alternatives
  • Check if there are new plans in your area with better value

An independent agent can do this comparison for you at no cost.

5. Keep Your Beneficiary Designations Up to Date

Life changes — marriages, divorces, births, and deaths — can affect who should receive your insurance benefits. Review your beneficiary designations on:

  • Life insurance policies
  • Retirement accounts
  • Any payable-on-death accounts

6. Ask About Supplemental Coverage

Your primary insurance may not cover everything. Consider supplemental options like:

  • Medigap (Medicare Supplement): Covers gaps in Original Medicare like copays and deductibles
  • Hospital Indemnity: Pays a fixed daily amount during hospital stays
  • Dental & Vision: Often not included in Medicare or basic ACA plans
  • Final Expense Insurance: Covers funeral and burial costs so your family isn't burdened

7. Work with an Independent Agent

An independent agent isn't tied to one insurance company — they shop across multiple carriers to find the best fit for your situation. Benefits include:

  • Unbiased advice across dozens of plans
  • No extra cost (agents are paid by the carriers, not you)
  • Year-round support with claims, billing questions, and annual reviews
